What To Expect

Maybe you’ve had acupuncture elsewhere, or maybe this is your first time. Let me tell you what to expect at our office.

When you walk into the office, please have a seat. There may be other people having or finishing up their treatments so please be mindful of too much noise. I will let you know when I am ready to take you back to the consult room. If I don’t acknowledge you, or come for you in 10 minutes, please come look for me.

Appointments are booked to reduce waiting times, regardless of which kind of appointment you have booked. Of course sometimes there may be a slight wait, so please allow enough time for your session.

When I am ready for you, I will bring you back to a private area to discuss your health concerns. We will go over everything you’d like to address.

When we are ready, you will be taken into the treatment area. I will explain the different treatments in a second.

Please allow 45-60 minutes for a session. Some sessions are faster than that if you have been in more frequently, your condition is not too complex, or if you’re just not much of a talker.

All types of acupuncture are full treatments.

General suggestions

Make sure you’ve eaten. Don’t be too full, only because you won’t be comfortable! If you have not eaten breakfast, please have at least a handful of nuts or something. You can get dizzy if you haven’t eaten breakfast, or haven’t eaten in a while.

Wear loose clothing, if possible-For example, if you want me to treat your legs, wear loose pants or shorts so I can get to them. I will work around whatever you have on though. This is especially important in semi-private or community.

Private

This is the more common way acupuncture is done in America.

You will be by yourself for the entire session.

This type of treatment allows for more privacy, or for some people, more relaxation. (no snoring from your neighbor!)

After we talk, you will get on the table or the lounge chair. This is your preference.

If you haven’t worn loose clothing, you may remove any necessary clothing (like pants or shirt) and get under the sheet. You will be as covered as possible during the treatment, with only the areas we are working on exposed.

The needles are left in about 20 minutes. If you have conditions that require both a front and a back treatment, each side is left in about 10 minutes.

Please see FAQs for more information about treatment length.

During the treatment-some people prefer to be left alone to rest or doze or even sleep.

Some people prefer to have me stay and chat.

It works both ways. It’s just a preference.

You may experience relaxation whether you are talking or not.

After the needles are taken out, we can do cupping, if requested, or acupressure.

This is not a full massage, just a compliment for the treatment, if needed.

If you do not like to be touched, please let me know!

After we are done, you get dressed if you have taken anything off.

Then you can set up another appointment if you wish, and pay.

Whole families or friends can be booked under a private appointment as well.

That’s it!

Semi-private

Semi-private is a hybrid of community acupuncture and private.

You are still getting a full treatment. There is still time to do both a front and a back treatment-if necessary.

The main difference is that another person may be on the table when you arrive, or arrive after you have gotten your  needles in. The tables are separated by privacy screens. And we always talk in the private back room, not in the treatment area.

Everyone is quiet and respectful of each other.

There may be noise, like people getting on or off the table, or from me asking them which point is more tender while I am putting in the needles. Once they are in, it is usually very peaceful.

Everyone is fully clothed. It is especially important to wear loose, movable clothing.

Please try and wear whatever will make it easy to get to your problem area/s.

The needles are left in about 20 minutes. If you have conditions that require both a front and a back treatment, each side is left in about 10 minutes.

We generally do this in the back room.

The point of this style of treatment is allow for people to receive acupuncture at a reduced rate. It also allows people to get in for a session within 24 hours, when they need it the most.

Community

This type of acupuncture is the most affordable. It is also a full treatment, but we can only do one side at each session.

Rather than having people arrive at once, in a group, I book everyone 15 minutes apart to reduce any wait time.

There will often  be 2 or 3  other people with you.

The tables are separated by privacy screens. And we always talk in the private back room, not in the treatment area.

Everyone is quiet and respectful of each other.

Children’s Acupuncture

Kids over the age of 12, are booked as “semi-private” appts. There may be others near them as explained above.

Less than that, please text me and I will see where I can fit them in privately.

The younger kids are usually in and out in 30 minutes or less. The older ones are usually longer, about 45 minutes.

You may book a whole family together. Please book under “private.”

What treatment style is best for you, depends on you, your budget and what you have going on.

If you have a very complex situation, private is the best option, if you can afford it.

If you have trouble relaxing with others nearby, community is probably not the best.

Whichever you choose, it is still a full treatment.
